Chapter Seven.

The storytelling waited while Jeremy and Daniel showered and changed into clean clothing. Both Jeremy and Daniel had regained their strength and were in high spirits. Lavinia bossed Rivers into getting cook to serve a buffet supper. Once the women had full plates, the men fell upon the repast muttering about being hungry. Jeremy stuffed his face under Lavinia’s watchful eye. Once she was assured he was eating with his usual enthusiasm, she relaxed.

“So, does someone want to tell me what’s happened?” Jeremy asked between bites. Lavinia, who wasn’t dining, took up the challenge and Jeremy and Daniel listened intently.

“Some of this I vaguely recall,” Daniel said half an hour later after Lavinia stopped speaking.

“You were alert for small periods, Daniel,” Sabine replied, looking happier now Daniel was back to his usual self.

“Cwenhild was certain that we weren’t cured, though. And we wouldn’t be healed until we discovered everything?” Jeremy inquired.

“Yes, there is something in my bedroom. I can’t enter; no one can. I believe my room holds the answers, but how to breach it, well that’s beyond me,” Lavinia said.

“Did you try going through a window?” Melisandre asked. Lavinia nodded.

“Many times. The shutters are closed, and we cannot open the window. Jeremy even tried having it removed when he first became earl, and that did not work either.”

“Wonderful. So how do we enter the bloody room? Does anyone have an idea?” Nicholas enquired.

“None,” Lavinia said, and everyone agreed.

“Do you have a secret chamber?” Melisandre asked, and Lavinia shook her head.

“No, I know every hidden passageway and nook. There are no concealed rooms.”

“At Waverley, we discovered a chamber with an altar. There were thirteen personal items laid upon it. A woman’s glove, a ribbon, a ladies’ purse, a ring, a scarf and a handkerchief,” Melisandre mused.

“Yes, and it had six men’s pieces on it, a hunting horn, a dagger, a man’s signet, a bow, a belt and a cloak pin,” Nicholas drawled, recalling the items.

“I remember you mentioned there were names there, too?” Abigail inquired.

“Yes, and we just met the owners. Their surnames and titles were not recorded,” Melisandre explained.

“Why at Waverley?” Abigail asked, and everyone looked at her.

“Pardon?” Sabine replied.

“Why at Waverley? Were the loose items scattered around or in a bag or something?” Abigail elaborated.

“No, it was a small wooden carved chest. When we opened it, we discovered those things. We left them alone because we believed they were part of what caused Waverley to be sentient,” Melisandre explained.

“So if they belonged to our ancestors, why were they kept at Waverley?” Abigail pushed.

“I don’t understand, dearest,” Tristian replied.

“DeLacy’s were the record keepers. The Russell’s were the leaders. So why were they not stored at either Eléonore Castle or DeLacy Park?” Abigail mused. Everyone exchanged confused glances.

“That’s a good question,” St John stated, sitting next to Henrietta.

“Yes, so why at Waverley? Does anyone have a map?” Melisandre asked. Jeremy nodded and began to move.

“Please, your Lordship, allow me,” Rivers said and disappeared.

“I don’t appreciate the way that man comes and goes,” Nicholas glowered.
